Early Childhood Summer Enrichment Program
Program Overview
The Auburn University Early Childhood Summer Enrichment Program provides students ages 3 to 8 years old developmentally enriching play experiences during the summer. The program includes support for all subject areas through the use of project-based curriculum. Childrens’ progress is measured through systematic documentation in light of appropriate early learning standards.
Mission
To enhance the education of young children by supporting their construction of knowledge through meaningful interactions in a respectful, challenging environment.
Playing with Purpose
The program has been set up in recent years to facilitate the study of how children play and interact with their world. We have explored how children actually spend their time in play settings, the types of materials they repeatedly choose and which materials afford opportunities for building agency and competence, how preservice teachers can best support and extend play, and how play contributes to growth and learning.
This year we are excited to focus intentionally on cultivating an awareness that play, in all of its light and joyful glory, serves a deep and necessary purpose in the growth and development of the child. Our theme this year, Playing with Purpose, is designed to support children, parents, preservice teachers, and program faculty as we navigate together through this journey of how to make the most of the role of play in early childhood settings.
