The Spanish Foreign Language program prepares teachers for secondary grades 6-12. This program includes coursework in a second language with a supporting course in speech provides students with the second language skill necessary to teach required and elective courses in state-approved foreign language curricula. Professional education coursework provides the theory-based knowledge, the pedagogical knowledge and skills, and the monitored practice in public schools that prospective teachers need to create effective instruction for learning second languages and cultures.

Distance Learning Option

Distance program offerings in Foreign Language Education: Spanish include the alternative master’s, traditional master’s, and education specialist degrees. Courses are primarily offered synchronously via online streaming video. Contact the Program Coordinator for additional program specific information relating to technology, exam, software/hardware, and technical competence requirements.

Accreditation and Approvals

Auburn University holds regional accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Auburn University’s College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The following foreign language education programs are approved by the Alabama State Board of Education: bachelor’s, master’s, and specialist programs in Spanish Education. In addition, the State of Alabama signs the National Association of State Directors of Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Agreement which facilitates the applications of graduates when they apply for certification in other states.
