Summer Reading Tutoring to be offered at Auburn University

April 12, 2019

The Auburn University Reading Center will offer individualized reading tutoring during June and July for children completing grades K-2 who are not yet reading fluently. Summer 2019 will be the 21st year for the program. Tutoring begins June 5 and concludes July 15. The hours are 8:00-8:45 Monday and Wednesday mornings in Haley Center.

The Early Childhood Education program will bring a group of tutors to the program this summer. In addition, several graduate students in the Master’s degree program for the Reading Specialist may be participating. If so, we may have opportunities for older struggling elementary readers to get extra help in reading his summer.

Summer Reading Tutoring is designed for children struggling with decoding, fluency, or comprehension. It is not an enrichment program for fluent readers or an English program for speakers of other languages. All participants should improve their decoding ability, reading fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment of reading through participation in Summer Reading Tutoring. Dr. Bruce Murray, associate professor of Reading Education, supervises instruction.

One parent wrote, “I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your reading program. It is probably the best reading program I have ever experienced! I am a former first grade teacher and am always looking for different ideas to share with my own children. I love the idea of your program being so individualized. I feel like every child was ‘coached’ on his/her ability level and not just grade level.”

Information, pictures, and application forms in Microsoft Word and in PDF formats can be found on the Reading Genie website.
