Costa Rica International Teacher Exchange Program

Auburn University’s College of Education is engaged in an innovative student exchange program with Universidad Nacional (UNA) in Costa Rica.

Each January, students from UNA who are studying English as a Second Language (ESL) come to Auburn for a Professional Development/Internship experience in modern language education. They are hosted by local families.  The Foreign Language program organizes observation programs in K-16 settings in Auburn, Birmingham, and Atlanta; schedules excursions to local points of interest; and accompanies the students on these trips.  In exchange, Auburn students have the same types of experiences as they study for two weeks in Heredia, Costa Rica each summer.

Since 2008, 25 Auburn students and 24 UNA students have participated in the program.  Sue Barry, Ph.D., is the director of the program. She helps the UNA students and their director(s) find host families while they are here and accompanies the Auburn students to Costa Rica each summer.
